Up man elopes with fiance’s mother

Uttar Pradesh Man Elopes with Fiancée’s Mother Days Before Wedding

Aligarh, India – April 30, 2025, 10:47 AM IST

In a shocking turn of events in Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh district, a 25-year-old man, Rahul Singh, eloped with his fiancée’s 39-year-old mother, Sapna Devi, just ten days before his scheduled wedding on April 16, 2025. The incident, which unfolded in Manohar Kayasth village under the Madarak police station, has left the local community reeling and sparked widespread outrage, with the bride-to-be, Shivani, and her family grappling with betrayal and public humiliation.

According to police reports, Rahul and Sapna fled with cash and jewelry valued at approximately ₹8.5 lakh (US$990), including ₹3.5 lakh in cash and gold ornaments from the family’s almirah. Shivani’s father, Jitendra, filed a complaint, alleging that Rahul had been communicating extensively with Sapna for three to four months prior, often spending hours on the phone. “I never imagined my wife running away with our daughter’s fiancé like this,” Jitendra told The Print. “This is an attack on our entire family’s honor.” He also claimed Rahul had a history of eloping with two other women in the past, incidents allegedly hushed up by his family.

The couple’s plan to escape to Nepal was thwarted when Aligarh police, acting on a tip, apprehended them near the border in Bihar on April 16. During a 12-hour counseling session at Dadon police station, Sapna revealed that years of domestic abuse and financial neglect by her husband drove her decision. “He drinks from morning till evening, beats me, and gives me just ₹1,500, keeping an account of it,” she told police, as reported by India TV News. Denying theft allegations, she insisted, “I didn’t take any gold or cash. I just wanted to leave a life filled with pain. I want to stay with Rahul.” Sapna declared their relationship “lifelong,” expressing her intent to marry him.

The elopement has drawn intense scrutiny, with villagers and Shivani’s family lamenting the “shame” brought upon their community. “The wedding was planned, the bride had mehndi on her hands, and now everything is ruined,” a neighbor told News24. Social media reactions on X reflect a mix of shock and skepticism, with some users speculating about Rahul’s motives and others questioning Sapna’s claims of abuse. One post noted, “Rahul’s past suggests a pattern—how did the family not see this coming?”

Police investigations have uncovered that Rahul’s friends and brother-in-law allegedly aided the elopement, escorting the pair to Kasganj railway station. Authorities have detained these associates for questioning, while Rahul and Sapna, now back in Aligarh, face no formal charges as Sapna insists she left willingly. The case, however, continues to stir debate about family dynamics and trust, with Sapna’s husband and Shivani rejecting her allegations of abuse as “false accusations.”

As Aligarh processes this extraordinary saga, the incident joins another recent case in nearby Gonda, where a 44-year-old woman, Usha, eloped with her daughter’s fiancé, Ram Swaroop, on April 25, days before a May 9 wedding. That couple, too, returned after public outcry, citing personal reasons for their flight. These back-to-back scandals have left Uttar Pradesh grappling with questions of loyalty, societal norms, and the complexities of human relationships in the public eye.
