Two-Wheeler Sales Surge in September 2025: Hero MotoCorp Tops Charts Amid Festive Boom

India’s two-wheeler market revved into high gear in September 2025, with total sales hitting a robust 24.58 lakh units—a 7.85% year-on-year (YoY) increase and a sharp 14.37% month-on-month (MoM) jump from August. Driven by festive anticipation, GST 2.0-led price cuts, and renewed consumer confidence, the sector showcased double-digit growth across most major players. Hero MotoCorp reclaimed the top spot, while electric variants gained traction despite a slight overall EV dip.

This festive kickstart signals a strong quarter for the industry, as manufacturers like Hero, Honda, and TVS reported doubled showroom footfalls and export surges. The data, compiled from Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) and Vahan portal registrations, underscores how affordability tweaks under the revised GST regime—slashing prices on entry-level commuters—spurred demand in both urban and rural pockets.

Hero MotoCorp led the pack with 6,87,220 units dispatched, an 8% YoY rise from 6,37,050 units in September 2024. Domestic sales alone reached 6,47,582 units, up 5% YoY, fueled by popular models like the Splendor and Xtreme series. The company hit a historic milestone, becoming the first Indian two-wheeler maker to cross 125 million cumulative production units. Exports also soared 94.8% YoY to 39,638 units, highlighting Hero’s global push.

Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India followed closely with 5,68,164 total units, including 5,05,693 domestic sales—a 5.1% MoM gain from August’s 4,81,021 units. The Activa scooter continued dominating the scooter segment, while cumulative April-September sales climbed to 29,91,024 units, up 6% MoM. Honda’s export volumes jumped 32.24% YoY to 62,471 units, bolstering its international footprint.

TVS Motor Company clocked 5,23,923 units, reflecting an 11% YoY growth from 4,71,792 units last year. Domestic figures stood at 4,13,279 units, a 12% YoY increase, powered by the Apache motorcycles and Jupiter scooters. TVS also shone in exports, shipping 1,10,644 units—a 7.8% YoY rise—while maintaining its electric two-wheeler (E2W) leadership for the sixth straight month.

Bajaj Auto reported 4,30,853 two-wheeler units, an 8% YoY uptick from 4,00,489 units, with domestic sales at 2,73,188 units (5% YoY growth). The Pulsar lineup and Chetak electric scooter drove gains, especially post-GST cuts that eased pricing pressures. Bajaj led exports with 1,57,665 units, up 11.7% YoY, capturing nearly 70% of India’s two-wheeler export share alongside TVS.

Royal Enfield, under Eicher Motors, notched 1,13,573 domestic units—a stellar 43% YoY surge from 79,325 units—thanks to the Classic 350 and Hunter 350 models resonating with premium buyers. Exports grew 40.55% YoY, though volumes remained modest compared to mass-market rivals.

Suzuki Motorcycle India rounded out the top performers with strong gains, though exact figures trailed the leaders; the Access scooter and Gixxer bikes benefited from festive promotions.

On the electric front, the E2W segment registered 1,04,056 units overall, but Vahan data shows a dip to 96,031 registrations from August’s 1,04,453—attributed to the Shraddh period, Navratri’s early GST benefits on ICE vehicles, and supply hiccups. TVS iQube led with 22,509 units (21.9% market share), followed by Bajaj Chetak at 19,580 units (18.7% share, a rebound from magnet shortages). Ather Energy overtook Ola Electric, selling 18,141 units (up aggressively via 477 dealerships), while Ola slipped to 12,223 units amid service network strains. Hero’s Vida V2 managed 12,753 units.

Exports across the board exploded 26.05% YoY to 12.01 lakh units, with Bajaj and TVS dominating 70% of the pie. Regionally, Gujarat saw a 38% YoY spike to 1,16,379 registrations, reflecting broader rural-urban recovery.

Industry watchers point to GST 2.0 as a game-changer, reducing ex-showroom prices by up to ₹10,000 on popular models and boosting affordability amid easing inflation. SIAM officials note that festive footfalls doubled year-over-year, with rural demand—hit hard by prior monsoons—bouncing back strongly. However, challenges like rare earth magnet shortages for EVs and competition from Chinese imports linger.

For consumers, this surge means better deals during Diwali, with discounts stacking atop price cuts. Economically, the sector’s 10.34% Q3 FY26 growth (65.07 lakh units) supports jobs in manufacturing hubs like Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh, while EV shifts promise greener commuting options.

As October unfolds with peak festivals, analysts forecast sustained momentum, potentially pushing annual two-wheeler sales toward 20 million units. With new launches like updated Pulsars and iQubes on the horizon, the market’s trajectory looks electric—literally and figuratively.
