Electric SUV fans, get excited! Tata Motors is reportedly planning to expand its powerful Tata Harrier EV QWD dual-motor all-wheel-drive system to lower variants, making this high-performance setup significantly more accessible in the booming Indian EV market.
The move comes as the Tata Harrier EV QWD has exceeded expectations, with the dual-motor version accounting for nearly 30-35% of total sales despite being limited to the top-end Empowered trim so far. Currently, the Harrier EV lineup starts at Rs 21.49 lakh (ex-showroom) for rear-wheel-drive models, offering impressive range and features. The flagship QWD variant, equipped with a 75kWh battery and dual electric motors, commands a premium starting at Rs 28.99 lakh. This all-wheel-drive (branded as Quad Wheel Drive or QWD) delivers a combined output of around 390-396 PS and 504 Nm of torque, sprinting from 0-100 kmph in just 6.3 seconds with Boost Mode activated.
What sets the QWD apart is its go-anywhere capability. The system pairs a front induction motor with a rear permanent magnet synchronous motor for superior traction, especially in challenging conditions. It includes six terrain response modes—Normal, Snow/Grass, Mud-Ruts, Sand, Rock Crawl, and Custom—plus Off-road Assist and impressive gradeability. The 75kWh battery provides an ARAI-certified range of up to 622 km, with real-world figures around 480-505 km.
Tata’s acti.ev+ platform underpins the Harrier EV, bringing advanced features like a massive 14.53-inch Samsung Neo QLED touchscreen, Level 2 ADAS, a panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats, JBL audio with Dolby Atmos, and a 5-star Bharat NCAP safety rating. Fast charging support allows 250 km of range in just 15 minutes via a 120kW DC charger.
Vivek Srivatsa, Chief Commercial Officer at Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, highlighted the strong demand: “We have seen more than anticipated uptake for the QWD variants—around 30% of sales—so we will offer it on lower variants too.” Reports suggest the dual-motor setup could soon arrive in mid-spec trims like Fearless+, potentially dropping the entry price for QWD by Rs 2-3 lakh or more.
This expansion aligns perfectly with Tata’s push to democratize advanced EV technology. The Harrier EV has already proven popular for its blend of performance, safety, and practicality, including V2L/V2V charging and a spacious cabin with over 500 liters of boot space.
While primarily targeting Indian buyers navigating diverse road conditions—from urban traffic to monsoon-slushy highways—the Harrier EV’s advancements resonate globally. For U.S. readers interested in electric SUVs, it showcases how emerging markets are rapidly closing the gap with affordable yet capable AWD EVs, influencing trends in range, torque delivery, and off-road prowess that could inspire imports or similar models stateside.
As Tata prepares to roll out these more attainable QWD options, possibly in the coming months, the Harrier EV strengthens its position against rivals like the Mahindra XEV 9e. This update not only boosts choices for performance-oriented buyers but also accelerates India’s shift toward smarter, greener mobility.
With overwhelming response to the dual-motor Harrier EV QWD and plans to broaden its availability, Tata is clearly listening to customers—delivering thrilling all-wheel-drive electric driving without the premium-only price tag.
