Super Eagles Set For AFCON 2025 Clash With Algeria After Late Drama Against DR Congo

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will face Algeria in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarter-final after the North Africans edged past DR Congo in a tense Round of 16 encounter settled deep into extra time earlier today, January 6.

Algeria booked their place with a 1–0 win, needing a late strike to finally break stubborn Congolese resistance. The match, played at a frantic pace and filled with stoppages, looked destined for penalties until Adil Boulbina struck in the 119th minute to decide the contest.

The first half ended goalless, with chances at a premium and midfield battles dominating proceedings. Algeria lost Ismael Bennacer to injury early in the second half, a blow that briefly disrupted their rhythm, while DR Congo grew in confidence as the game wore on.

Substitutions became the order of the day as the coaches searched for a breakthrough. Riyad Mahrez was withdrawn at 70 minutes as Algeria injected fresh legs, while DR Congo responded with changes of their own, including the introduction of Gael Kakuta and Edo Kayembe.

Despite the flurry of activity, neither side could find a way through in normal time. Extra time brought more urgency and, inevitably, more cards as tempers frayed. Referee Mohamed Maarouf Eid Mansour was kept busy, cautioning players from both teams as fatigue set in.

The decisive moment finally arrived one minute from the end of extra time. Ramiz Zerrouki picked out Boulbina inside the area and the forward kept his composure to send Algeria through, sparking celebrations among the Algerian bench and supporters.

The win sets up a mouth-watering quarter-final showdown against the Super Eagles of Nigeria, who will now prepare for a stern test against Algeria. The match is scheduled for Saturday, 10 January, with kick-off set for 5 pm (WAT).
