Police arrest man for murder of commercial motorcyclist in Delta

Delta Police Crackdown: 25-Year-Old Nabbed in Shocking Murder of Beloved Okada Rider

In a grim reminder of the dangers lurking on Delta State’s backroads, police have arrested a young suspect linked to the brutal killing of a 53-year-old commercial motorcyclist who vanished after a routine pickup. The case, unfolding in the bustling town of Agbor, has locals on edge, as okada riders—those hardworking folks ferrying passengers through traffic-choked streets—face yet another threat in their daily grind.

It started on October 6, 2025, when Friday Orumgbe, a father and fixture in Idumu Oza community, Agbor, pedaled off on his Lifan bike for what should have been an ordinary fare. By nightfall, he hadn’t returned home. His worried family reported him missing the next day at the Agbor Division police station, sparking a quiet but determined hunt led by Divisional Police Officer CSP Michael Obekpa.

Fast forward to October 16, and a break: Operatives zeroed in on Musa Buhari, 25, snatching him up in Alihagu Village and recovering Orumgbe’s stolen Tecno T101 phone from his possession. Under questioning, Buhari cracked, admitting he and his partner-in-crime, Manu Usman (still on the run), had flagged down Orumgbe as fake passengers. They coaxed him to a secluded bush along Power Line near Oki, Agbor, where they ambushed him with a hoe, knocking him out cold before swiping his bike and phone and bolting.

Guided by Buhari’s confession, police returned to the spot and unearthed Orumgbe’s decomposed body—confirmed by relatives and rushed to Central Hospital Mortuary in Agbor for autopsy. “The Delta State Police Command has continued to record significant operational successes in its renewed drive to stamp out violent crimes,” said spokesperson SP Bright Edafe in a statement from Asaba, highlighting how tips from the community and street-level patrols made this bust possible.

This isn’t isolated—Delta’s seen a spike in attacks on okada operators, often tied to quick-cash grabs amid tough economic times. Riders like Orumgbe, earning modest fares to support families, are easy marks for opportunists preying on the state’s rural stretches. Edafe noted the command’s broader wins, including a separate October 19 sweep in Warri’s Ubeji area that netted a cultist and his accomplice, along with a stash of weapons from their Lexus SUV. That haul: a homemade double-barrel gun, battle axe, and ammo cartridges, underscoring the tangled web of robbery and cult clashes police are unraveling.

For everyday folks in Ika South and beyond, this hits hard. Commercial bikes aren’t just transport; they’re lifelines in areas where buses are scarce, keeping markets humming and kids in school. One anonymous rider told local reporters, “We ride with one eye on the road and one on the shadows now—justice for Friday means we might breathe easier.” As the probe presses on to bag Usman and the missing motorcycle, Delta cops are doubling patrols, urging riders to stick to well-lit routes and report shady fares.

The manhunt continues, with Buhari in custody as investigators piece together if this ties into larger rings. Stay safe out there—Delta’s roads need its heroes rolling, not rolling away.
