Tragic Incident in Delhi: Man Arrested After Newborn Found Dead in Manhole

Delhi, May 17, 2025 – In a shocking and tragic incident, Delhi police have arrested a 28-year-old man, identified as Arjun Sharma, on charges of murder and concealing a birth after the body of a newborn was discovered in a manhole in the Ashok Vihar area. Authorities believe Sharma gave birth to the child in a public toilet and disposed of the infant’s body in an attempt to hide the incident.

According to police reports, the incident came to light late Friday evening when a local sanitation worker noticed a foul odor emanating from a manhole near a busy market in Ashok Vihar. Upon inspection, the worker discovered the body of a newborn, still with the umbilical cord attached, wrapped in a plastic bag. The police were immediately notified, and a forensic team was dispatched to the scene.

Preliminary investigations suggest that Sharma, a resident of a nearby slum, gave birth to the child in a public toilet on Thursday night. Sources close to the investigation revealed that Sharma, who had kept his pregnancy a secret, panicked after the birth. In a state of distress, he allegedly threw the infant into the toilet, which was later carried through the sewage system to the manhole where it was found. Bloodstains and other evidence in the toilet corroborated the timeline of events.

The infant’s body was sent to AIIMS for a postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. Early reports indicate the baby may have died during or shortly after birth, though authorities are awaiting confirmation to ascertain whether the child was stillborn or died due to the actions of the father.

Sharma was apprehended early Saturday morning after police reviewed CCTV footage from the area, which showed him entering and leaving the public toilet around the suspected time of the incident. During interrogation, Sharma confessed to the act, citing fear and shame as his motives. He reportedly told officers that he was unprepared for fatherhood and feared societal judgment, particularly as a transgender man in a conservative community.

This incident has sparked outrage among local residents, with many gathering outside the Ashok Vihar police station to demand justice for the infant. Women’s rights and child welfare activists have also weighed in, calling for better support systems for transgender individuals facing unexpected pregnancies. “This tragedy highlights the urgent need for accessible healthcare, mental health support, and education for all, regardless of gender identity,” said Priya Malhotra, a local activist. “No one should feel so isolated that they resort to such a desperate act.”

The case also raises questions about the societal pressures and stigma faced by transgender individuals in India, particularly in matters of reproductive health. While India has made strides in recognizing transgender rights, including the 2019 Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, implementation remains inconsistent, and many in the community still face discrimination and lack of support.

Sharma has been charged with murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code, as well as concealing a birth under Section 318. He is currently in custody, and a court hearing is scheduled for Monday. The police are continuing their investigation to determine if there were any other factors or individuals involved in the incident.

This heartbreaking event serves as a grim reminder of the challenges faced by marginalized communities and the critical need for systemic change to prevent such tragedies in the future.
