Google Fixes Bug That LED AI Overviews to say it’s now 2024

Google Resolves AI Overviews Bug That Incorrectly Stated Current Year as 2024

Mountain View, California, USA – May 30, 2025 – Google has fixed a bug in its AI Overviews feature that caused it to incorrectly state the current year as 2024 when users asked if it was 2025, according to TechCrunch and WIRED. The issue, reported by users on X and confirmed by outlets like Android Authority on May 28, 2025, was resolved late on May 29, 2025. When asked why the error occurred, Google did not specify a cause but stated it was working on updates to prevent similar issues.

The bug led to inconsistent responses, with AI Overviews sometimes claiming, “No, it is not 2025. The current year is 2024,” or even contradicting itself by saying, “No, it is not 2025. The current year is 2025.” WIRED noted that queries like “is it 2025” produced varied results, including a May 28, 2024, date claim and references to locations like Kiribati being in 2025 due to time zone differences. The error, which cited sources like Reddit and Wikipedia, highlighted ongoing challenges with AI Overviews, a feature used by 1.5 billion users in over 100 countries, per Google CEO Sundar Pichai.

This isn’t the first misstep for AI Overviews, launched in May 2024 at Google I/O. Previous errors included recommending glue to make cheese stick to pizza and suggesting eating rocks for vitamins, prompting Google to make over a dozen technical improvements, such as limiting user-generated content and enhancing detection of nonsensical queries. Posts on X, like those from @daOrbit and @JoeMaristela, expressed frustration, with some users humorously questioning if Google had invented a “time machine.”

The incident underscores the limitations of AI-driven search tools, which rely on predictive language models and can struggle with simple queries. Google’s ongoing refinements aim to address such errors, but as WIRED noted, “a consistent skepticism is still required” when using AI-generated outputs.
