Former NLC Boss Ayuba Wabba Loses Father


The immediate past President of the Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC) and former global leader of the International Trade Union Confederation, Ayuba Wabbahas been thrown into mourning following the death of his father, Jidayi Filibus Asarya Wabba.

The elder statesman reportedly passed away on January 8, 2026, at the age of 90.

In a statement issued by the family, the late Wabba was described as a devout Christian, retired military officer and community leader who lived a life of discipline, service and integrity.

According to the statement, he served in the Nigerian Army for 35 years before retiring to private life, where he devoted himself to community service and grassroots leadership.

After his retirement from the military, Wabba continued to serve his people as the District Head of Sabongari-Puba in Askira/Uba Local Government Area of ​​Borno State.

In that capacity, he was actively involved in leading self-help initiatives, mentoring young people and offering guidance at elders’ council meetings.

The family noted that his humility, leadership qualities and commitment to service earned him deep respect within his community and beyond.

The late Wabba is survived by his wife, 11 children and 26 grandchildren, including Comrade Ayuba Wabba, a prominent figure in Nigeria’s labor movement and holder of the traditional title of Barden Askira (Chief Defender) of the Askira Emirate.

The family disclosed that the late elder statesman will be buried on Saturday, January 17, 2026, in his hometown of Sabongari-Puba, Askira/Uba Local Government Area of ​​Borno State.

Reacting to the death, the Emir of Askira, His Royal Highness Alhaji Mai Abdullahi Ibn Askirama, paid glowing tribute to the deceased, describing him as a man whose life was defined by service, discipline and moral guidance.

The monarch noted that the courage and wisdom of the late Wabba would continue to inspire his family and the larger community.

Comrade Wabba and his family are currently mourning the loss of a father whose enduring legacy of service left a lasting imprint on both the military and civic life in Borno State.
