SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — A mobile video production truck exploded early Tuesday morning in a residential neighborhood, damaging at least six homes and forcing the evacuation of dozens of residents in this northwest Chicago suburb.

The explosion occurred around 6:30 a.m. in the 1200 block of Willow Creek Drive, according to Schaumburg Fire Chief Michael Kurtz. The truck, which was parked on the street overnight for a scheduled video production, erupted in flames that could be seen from several blocks away.

“The force of the explosion was tremendous,” said resident Maria Gonzalez, whose home sits directly across from where the truck was parked. “It felt like an earthquake. All our windows shattered, and debris was everywhere.”

Emergency responders arrived within minutes of receiving multiple 911 calls reporting the blast. Firefighters worked for nearly two hours to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby structures.

Three residents were treated for minor injuries, including cuts from broken glass and smoke inhalation. No fatalities have been reported.

The truck belonged to Midwest Productions, a Chicago-based company that provides mobile video services for corporate events and commercials. Company spokesperson Janet Williams said the truck was equipped with generators, lighting equipment, and various electronic components.

“We are cooperating fully with investigators to determine what caused this tragic incident,” Williams said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with the affected families.”

Fire officials believe a malfunction in the truck’s electrical system may have triggered the explosion, though the exact cause remains under investigation. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has been called in to assist with the probe.

The Red Cross has set up temporary shelter at Schaumburg High School for displaced residents. Village officials estimate damages could exceed $500,000 across the affected properties.

“This is unprecedented for our community,” said Schaumburg Mayor Tom Dailly. “We’re grateful no one was seriously hurt, but our hearts go out to these families who have lost so much.”

Willow Creek Drive remains closed between Oak Street and Maple Avenue as cleanup efforts continue. ComEd crews are working to restore power to approximately 200 homes in the surrounding area.

The incident has prompted village officials to review regulations regarding overnight parking of commercial vehicles in residential neighborhoods. Currently, such vehicles require special permits for extended stays.

Residents described the explosion as unlike anything they had experienced. Dave Patterson, who lives two houses down from the blast site, said the impact cracked his foundation and knocked pictures off his walls.

“I’ve lived here for 20 years, and nothing like this has ever happened,” Patterson said. “We’re all just thankful it wasn’t worse.”

The investigation is expected to continue for several days. Residents affected by the explosion are being asked to document damages and contact their insurance companies immediately.
