Four Tourists Among Five Killed in Helicopter Crash Near Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand
Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand – May 8, 2025
A tragic helicopter crash near Ganganani in Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand, claimed the lives of five people, including four tourists, and left two others seriously injured on Thursday, May 8, 2025. The private chopper, operated by Air Heritage and en route to Gangotri as part of the Char Dham Yatra pilgrimage, crashed around 9 AM, plunging into the Bhagirathi River, according to reports from NDTV and posts on X.
Garhwal Divisional Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey confirmed the fatalities, stating that the administration, along with State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local police, promptly reached the crash site for relief and rescue operations. Local residents also assisted in the initial response. The two injured passengers were rushed to a nearby medical facility, though their condition remains critical, as per a statement from Uttarkashi District Magistrate Deepak Rawat cited by India Today.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed grief over the incident, announcing that he has directed the administration to provide all possible assistance to the injured and ordered a thorough investigation into the crash. “SDRF and district administration teams have immediately reached the spot for relief and rescue work,” Dhami said, as quoted by ANI. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, with preliminary reports suggesting possible technical failure or adverse weather conditions, though no official confirmation has been provided.
The helicopter, a Bell 407, was carrying seven passengers, including the pilot, and was part of the busy pilgrimage season, which sees thousands of devotees visiting sacred sites like Gangotri, Kedarnath, Yamunotri, and Badrinath. The Char Dham Yatra, facilitated by helicopter services like those offered by Air Heritage and Pawan Hans, is a vital lifeline for pilgrims navigating Uttarakhand’s rugged terrain, but the region’s unpredictable weather and challenging topography have led to several aviation incidents in recent years.
This crash follows a history of helicopter accidents in Uttarakhand. In October 2022, seven people, including six pilgrims, died in a crash near Kedarnath due to poor visibility, and in August 2019, three people perished when a relief helicopter hit a power cable in Uttarkashi. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is expected to probe this latest incident, with the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau likely to conduct a detailed inquiry, as was the case in previous crashes.
The identities of the victims have not yet been released, pending notification of their families. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences, stating, “My thoughts are with the bereaved families in this tragic hour,” via a post from the Prime Minister’s Office on X. The incident has sparked renewed calls for enhanced safety measures for helicopter operations in Uttarakhand, particularly during the high-traffic pilgrimage season.
As rescue operations conclude and the investigation begins, the tragedy underscores the risks of air travel in Uttarakhand’s mountainous regions, casting a shadow over the ongoing Char Dham Yatra.
