Italian Citizen Mattia Minguzzi Killed in Istanbul, Grave Site Desecrated

April 10, 2025 – Istanbul, Turkey

Turkish and Italian authorities are investigating the shocking death of Italian citizen Mattia Minguzzi in Istanbul, a case that has taken an even more disturbing turn with reports that his grave was desecrated shortly after burial.

Minguzzi, 34, a digital marketing consultant from Bologna who had been living in Istanbul for the past three years, was found dead in his apartment in the Beyoğlu district last Friday under what local police have described as “suspicious circumstances.” Initial reports suggest he died from multiple stab wounds, though authorities have not yet released the official autopsy results.

The Italian Consulate in Istanbul confirmed Minguzzi’s death on Monday and stated they are working closely with Turkish authorities on the investigation. “We are providing all possible assistance to the family during this incredibly difficult time,” said Consulate spokesperson Elena Bianchi.

In a disturbing development that has intensified diplomatic tensions, Minguzzi’s grave at the Catholic Cemetery of Feriköy was reportedly vandalized Tuesday night, just hours after his burial service. Cemetery staff discovered the desecration early Wednesday morning and immediately alerted authorities.

“The grave had been dug up, and there was evidence of deliberate damage to the burial site,” said cemetery administrator Father Paolo Lombardi. “In my 15 years overseeing this cemetery, I have never witnessed such a deplorable act.”

Turkish police have cordoned off both the apartment crime scene and the cemetery as the investigation continues. Sources close to the investigation, speaking on condition of anonymity, indicated that security camera footage from near the cemetery is being reviewed.

Minguzzi’s family arrived in Istanbul earlier this week to arrange for the repatriation of his body, which will now be delayed due to the ongoing investigation into the grave desecration. His sister, Claudia Minguzzi, made a brief statement to reporters outside the Italian Consulate.

“We are devastated and struggling to comprehend these horrific events,” she said. “Mattia loved Istanbul and its people. He had built a life here. We demand justice for my brother and answers about this unconscionable violation of his final resting place.”

The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a statement expressing “profound concern” over the incidents and has dispatched additional consular staff to Istanbul to support the investigation and assist the family.

Turkish Interior Minister Ahmet Yılmaz addressed the case during a press conference Wednesday afternoon. “We consider these acts to be extremely serious crimes, and we are dedicating significant resources to solving them,” he stated. “The safety of foreign nationals in Turkey is of paramount importance to us, and we will not rest until those responsible are brought to justice.”

Local residents in the Beyoğlu neighborhood where Minguzzi lived described him as friendly and well-integrated into the community. “He spoke good Turkish and was always respectful,” said Mehmet Özkan, owner of a café Minguzzi frequented. “Everyone here is shocked by what happened.”

Friends and colleagues have organized a memorial vigil to be held in Istanbul’s Taksim Square this evening, while a parallel event is being planned in Bologna’s Piazza Maggiore.

Authorities have not yet indicated whether they believe the murder and grave desecration are connected or if there are any suspects in either case. They have appealed to the public for any information that might assist in the investigation.

The incidents have raised concerns about security for expatriates in Istanbul, though officials have emphasized this appears to be an isolated case rather than part of any broader pattern targeting foreigners.

The Italian Embassy has established a dedicated hotline for Italian citizens in Turkey who may have concerns about their safety following these events.
