Fear Grips Abuja As Nurse, Female Lawyer Found Dead By Roadside

The lifeless body of an Abuja-based female lawyer has been found along the Kubwa Expressway, heightening fears over the resurgence of “one-chance” attacks in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Naija News reports that the latest development comes barely days after the body of a nurse with the Federal Medical Centre, Jabi, was discovered by the roadside.

It was reported that the nurse, Chinamerem Chuwumeziem, a staff member of FMC Jabi, completed her afternoon shift on January 3, 2026, and boarded a commercial vehicle on her way home.

However, she never made it to her destination.

According to Daily Trust, her body was later found dumped by the roadside under circumstances that are yet to be fully explained by security agencies.

Lawyer’s body found on Kubwa Expressway

While details surrounding Chuwumeziem’s death are still emerging, the body of another woman, identified as Princess Chigbo Mediatrix, an Abuja-based lawyer believed to be a former Treasurer of the Nigerian Bar Association, Abuja Branch, was discovered along the Kubwa Expressway.

There are strong insinuations that Mediatrix may also have fallen victim to suspected “one-chance” hoodlums who operate across major roads in the capital.

A post on 𝕏 (formerly Twitter) claimed that the deceased was found at a different location from the nurse, with documents suggesting she may have been a staff member of the FCT High Court.

However, the media platform could not verify her employment status, as some staff members contacted at the court said they were unaware of the incident.

The social media post, which included an image of the deceased and her identification card, stated that her bag was discovered a short distance from her body.

This, residents say, fits the pattern of “one-chance” attacks where victims are robbed, assaulted, and thrown out of moving vehicles.

Naija News reports that residents of the FCT have called on the police and other security agencies to act swiftly and provide clear information on the incidents.

A civil servant based in Jabi, Ismail Umar, expressed concern over the lack of detailed official communication.

“In a normal society, the police would have commenced a thorough investigation and kept the public abreast of its progress,” Umar said.

Another resident, Agnes Attah, urged the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to pay closer attention to security matters.

She acknowledged some improvements but insisted that gaps remain.

“How can someone finish work in the afternoon and be killed in such a manner without any official response? It is not acceptable in a city like Abuja,” Daily Trust quoted the resident as saying.

Earlier on Tuesday, the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives condemned the killing of Chuwumeziem, describing it as an attack on healthcare workers across the country.

In a statement signed by the Chairman of the FCT Council of NANNM, Jama Medan, the association confirmed that the nurse was in active service at FMC Abuja.

“Having spent her day rendering selfless service to humanity, she closed from her shift and boarded a vehicle. Tragically, she never made it home,” read the statement.

The association called on the FCT administration to strengthen security around hospitals, bus stops, and major junctions where healthcare workers board vehicles after work.

Police Confirm Incidents

The FCT Police Command has confirmed the incidents, saying preliminary findings suggest a possible link to the activities of “one-chance” gangs within the capital.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, said on Wednesday that investigations were ongoing.

She assured residents that efforts were being intensified to unravel the circumstances surrounding the deaths and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Joint patrol teams have been observed stationed at strategic locations across the city, with security operatives stopping and checking unpainted vehicles conveying passengers as part of measures to curb the menace.
