Why Kwankwasiyya Members Are Considering Dumping NNPP For APC

The Special Advisor to the Kano State Governor on Digital Economy, Yusuf Sharada, has explained why members of the Kwankwasiyya movement are considering defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC),

Naija News reports that Sharada cited the need to access certain benefits tied to alignment with the party at the centre.

Sharada made the remarks on Wednesday during an interview on The Morning Brief on Channels Television.

According to the governor’s aide, Kano State is being constrained in accessing some federal projects because it does not belong to the ruling party at the national level.

,There are so many issues that led us to conclude that maybe all these are happening because we do not belong to the party that is controlling the centre.” Sharada said.

,There are so many projects that somehow are beyond the state apparatus. There are some states that are within the party controlling the center and are enjoying all these projects, and we are not enjoying them.”

Sharada acknowledged that Kano State still receives its statutory allocation but stressed that it is insufficient to meet the development needs of the North-West state.

He said the desire to attract more development projects was one of the key considerations behind the defection talks.

The aide also expressed concern over ongoing internal disputes within the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), especially as preparations for the 2027 general elections intensify.

“We have seen what has transpired in Zamfara, and we don’t want it to repeat itself in Kano State,” he said.

“That’s why we want to have a safer platform that will allow all our elective office holders to contest yet another election, and if given a mandate by the people, continue administering the state.,

While clarifying his position, Sharada said Kano had not been completely denied its rights by the Federal Government but admitted that being in opposition comes with limitations.

,I’m not saying that they completely denied us our rights. But of course, if you find yourself in opposition, you may not likely get what you want.,” he said.

,There are things that are your right, and there are things you are privileged [to get] because you align with people at the centre.”

The Kwankwasiyya Movement, popularly known as the ‘Red Cap Revolution’, was founded by former Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Sharada’s comments come amid reports that Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf is planning to defect from the NNPP to the APC.
